10/2/15 Friday News

Happy Friday!

Here's a look at what we did this week:

Math – We’ve been taking math slow this week to make sure students really understand subtracting with mental math before moving on. After spending three days on it, I am happy to say that most students are finally feeling confident! We are moving on to estimating sums and so far students are breezing through this!

Social Studies – Social studies has been linking up perfectly with our fishing field trip and our reading for this week! We have been talking about our natural resources and how we can conserve and protect them. Students came up with a lot of great ideas on how they can help on a local level.

Science – What fun science was this week with the solar eclipse and blood moon! On Monday, we were able to relate our teachings about the solar system to real life as students shared their observations of the moon. It was interesting to see how students saw different things at different times of the night. This bridged perfectly into our next lesson as we learned about the phases of the moon. Today, students completed a study guide for a mid unit test that they will have next week.

Reading – This week in reading, we focused on skills for reading information social studies texts. We read about caring for our natural resources and talked about how text features in an informational text can greatly enhance our story. We have ended Unit 1 in reading and will be reviewing and taking a test towards the end of next week.

Writing – We are continuing to learn skills for writing a good personal narrative in our writer’s workshops. This week we focused on “showing”, not “telling”. I used “Come On, Rain!” as a mentor text to model descriptive language to students. In the story, the author shows us that it is hot outside without actually saying, “it is hot outside”. Students were able to practice this new skill by taking a simple sentence and creating a paragraph that “shows” instead of “tells” the sentence. Next week students will use this skill as we continue in our personal narratives.

Religion – We ended Chapter 2 this week by discussing creation and our Parish Church. Students decorated prayer cards that were laminated and sent home in their Friday folders.
